GottaCon 2013 Gamers Silent Auction – It’s Back!

Posted in News on January 3rd, 2013 by evanhatch

On Saturday February 2nd only between 9:00am and 6:30pm, come out and take part in the GottaCon gamers silent auction brought to you by GottaCon Conventions. Convention goers are welcome to bring out their own items for sale as well as bid on the wide variety of items that will be available. We stress patience with convention staff as it takes time to enter all the information of submitted items and when the auction is complete to record all the results. If you would like to fill out a form and bring it with you to the convention please download the form here: http://www.gottacon.com/components/gc2013auctiontemplate.pdf. Also this year we are looking to set up self serve computers where you can fill out your forms and print them for our staff.

What is a silent auction?
In this type of auction, items are put on display. To place a bid, bidders write on a piece of paper located near the item. The bidder will be able to see the bids made already and must bid at least the minimum amount specified higher than the current bid. The minimum increase over the current bid will be $1.00 unless otherwise indicated. Bidding closes after a pre-set period of time. The highest bidder at the end of the auction wins the item and pays the price submitted.

The GottaCon silent auction will run from 9:00am until 6:30pm. At 6:30pm all bidding will stop. Winners may pay for the items they won between 7:30pm and 9:00pm. If you are not able to be present during the time indicated above please make arrangements with the GottaCon staff. If you cannot pick up your items by 9:00pm Saturday night and you have not made arrangements with the GottaCon Conventions staff for an alternate time the item in question will then go to the next highest bidder. Please be patient with our staff at the end of the auction as they have to collect the items and record the winning bids before they can be released to the winners.

Cash is the only form of payment accepted. During the auction all items will be monitored. GottaCon Conventions is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged items.

Submitting an item for sale
Please bring your item to the GottaCon auction booth in area 19 on the map and be prepared to fill out a quick info sheet on your item. This info sheet will help others identify and understand your sale items as well as allow us to keep track of whose item is whose. All items will be put on display with a bid sheet. We recommend assigning a minimum bid to each item you submit. There is a small non-refundable charge of $1.00 (HST included) for each item submitted for sale. Items for sale may be submitted at the GottaCon auction Booth between 9:00am and 5:30pm Saturday February 2nd.

Please check in with the GottaCon auction booth between 7:30pm and 9:00pm Saturday evening to find out if your item(s) sold or not. If your item sold you will be reimbursed the amount it sold for once payment is received. If you are not able to be present during the time indicated above please make arrangements with the GottaCon staff. Please be patient with our staff at the end of the auction as they have to collect the items, cash and record the winning bids before they can pay the owners for their items that sold. If your item does not sell your item will be returned to you. Any items that do not sell and are not collected by 7:00pm Sunday February 3rd will become the property of GottaCon Conventions. If you are not able to collect your items during the time indicated above please make arrangements with the GottaCon staff.

Some items that will be up for bid are:
• Board games new and used
• Tradable card games, singles and boosters
• Previously owned video games
• Video game systems
• Collectible/non-collectible miniatures and accessories
• Role-playing games old and new
• Books, comic books and animé
• Movies
• Many other gaming and hobby related items

The GottaCon auction provides a great opportunity to buy and sell all of your gaming and hobby related items at great prices. The previous three years have been hugely successful so make sure you check out the auction on Saturday!!

Please note that GottaCon Conventions reserves the right to refuse any items submitted for sale in the auction. All items must be registered with GottaCon staff at the special events area and a fee of $1.00 per item must be paid.

    Video Gaming at GottaCon 2013

Posted in News on December 18th, 2012 by evanhatch

Today we are pleased to announce the Video Game line-up for GottaCon 2013. Below please find our list of game systems, games and tournaments planned for GottaCon 2013, which will be held February 1st to 3rd, 2013 at Pearkes arena in Victoria BC (3100 Tillicum Road).

This is the biggest year for video gaming at GottaCon yet, and we don’t just mean in size. Sponsors and prizing are insane! This year we are pleased to announce Logitech G-Series™ as our official PC LAN sponsor and
Mad Catz™ as our official console gaming LAN sponsor. We have numerous additional major sponsors and organizers for our video games area including: ROCCAT, Astro Gaming, Ubisoft (ShootMania: Storm™), Torn Banner (Chivalry: Medieval Warfare), Kingston HyperX, Antec, GUNNAR Optiks, Future Shop – Langford location, Island Collateral, End of Reality Game Servers, LANcouver, BC Gamer, IRL Events, eSports Collective Network, Canadian Joysticks and CrossXover. All of these fantastic companies have provided substantial support in the way of prizes and technology. Events sponsored by these companies are noted below.

We continue to have two types of tournaments in additions to our public stations and BYOC seats: premium tournaments and secondary tournaments. Premium tournaments require a BYOC weekend pass or the video game add-on package to be able to participate in. Premium events will be more competitive and have higher prize payouts. Secondary tournaments are free to any attendees and may have smaller prize pools. These events are meant to be casual, fun and easy to jump in and out of.

The events listed below only include high level information on each of our events. If you have any questions regarding events please contact Spencer at videogames@gottacon.com. For more details on events please visit:

    Premium events: http://www.gottacon.com/?page_id=1331
    Secondary events: http://www.gottacon.com/?page_id=1101

    Logitech G-Series PC LAN

Premium events will be managed by LANcouver and cast live by eSports Collective Network. We will have public PC stations that are available for free play in the Logitech G-Series PC LAN but they will not be available for premium tournament play. We have increased capacity in the PC LAN area to 112 BYOC seats. These seats are available for reservation via purchase of the BYOC weekend pass or the BYOC add-on. If they do not fill up, they will be allocated on site on a first come first serve basis

Also new this year, the video game area will be shutting down at 4am each night. This is due to observed attendance levels in those areas after 3am for the last four years. Security will be posted in the area between 4am and 8am and only staff will be allowed access. It will also give us time to cool down the servers, reset the routers and deal with patching, hardware issues etc that develop over the weekend. Attendees that BYOC, if they want, can leave their systems hooked up as there will be security overnight but public access opens back up shortly after 8:00am the following day. Other onsite option is to check your PC with our coat check/information desk.

    BYOC Seating
There will be approximately 112 BYOC slots available which will be assigned first based on preregistered attendees with BYOC passes or add-ons (this means you must have purchased a ticket to GottaCon 2013 either at a retail location or via our website) then on a first come first serve basis. If you have purchased your ticket as described above you must log into our Warhorn site, create an account and once approved by GottaCon staff reserve a seat in the BYOC event located in slot 1. In order to be seated as a team please make sure all of your team members show up on time. We will accommodate team seating as best we can but there is no guarantee of being seated together for late arrivals.

    LAN Check in
BC Gamer will be heading up LAN HQ and secondary events this year so if you preregistered for a BYOC seat via our Warhorn site please check in at the LAN where they will assign you a seat and get you all plugged in. If you are showing up and hoping to get an available spot please check in at the LAN HQ and you will be assigned a seat if available. Be aware that our LAN was full last year. Also this year we have confirmed convention support from Wizards of the Coast which has once again allowed us to deliver some extra great events with cool prizes!

A new and VERY important detail this year is there is a set limit of 150 MTG Weekend Passes available for purchase this year. At the time of writing we are already 12% sold out. If you want to receive maximum value with regards to MTG events at GottaCon 2013 get one of these passes before they are sold out. The advance ticket price (until January 22, 2013) is $65 HST included. At the door (if there are any left) they will be $70 HST included. Entry into the MTG events at GottaCon will still be possible without an MTG weekend pass but only while seating is available and you will need to pay each individual events entry fee on site at the Yellowjacket tournament reporting centre.

As mentioned above Wizards of the Coast is supporting our convention (thank you Wizards!) and as a result we will be hosting three fantastic special events again this year. These events are a Mini Master tournament, an all weekend Intro Deck Duels event and Gunslinging. How these special events work is included in the event descriptions below.

The Magic the Gathering weekend pass this year will cost $65 taxes included and will include the following:
    - Full weekend pass to GottaCon 2013 (valued at $40)
    - Entry into the VIMC MTG Open event which consists of one Standard Constructed Flight event and one Sealed Gatecrash Event (valued at $40)
    - FNM Standard Constructed “I Flailed in the Flights” Event (valued at $5)
    - Free entry into the Mini Master event (valued at ($10)
    - Free entry into the Intro Pack Convention League Event (valued at $15)

As you can see the value of the MTG weekend package is very good and we hope you are all as excited as we are.

Below find a brief list of the Magic: The Gathering events you will find at GottaCon 2013. There will be thousands of dollars in prizes to be won in our MTG line-up. If you would like to see more in depth information on these events please stay tuned to our website for when we release our event listing. Prices include HST.

    By GottaCon Team and Yellowjacket

    Start Time: 9:00AM
    Player Cap: 150

Similar to what MTG fans experienced on Magic Celebration day and just like we did at GottaCon 2012, this format is a fast fun way to play Magic! Each participant will received two boosters and have 15 minutes to construct a 25 card minimum deck. Participants will then be paired in a single elimination format with 50 minute rounds. The winner of each round will receive an additional booster and will have 10 minutes to modify their decks with these new cards. After round three deck size must be a minimum of 40 cards. Participants will then be paired for the next round. This pattern will continue until there in one overall winner. Round for this event will discontinue at 2pm Saturday and any remaining player’s decks will be collected and boxed by judges at the tournament reporting desk. The final rounds will continue on Sunday at 9am. This is in an effort to reduce conflict with the MTG Open Sealed event which starts at 2pm.

Price: Free with MTG weekend pass or $10 at the Yellowjacket tournament reporting centre.
Prizes: To be determined, based on attendance.

Magic: The Gathering – GottaCon Two Headed Giant Sealed Tournament
    By GottaCon Team and Yellowjacket
    Day: Saturday
    Start Time: 9:00PM

Teams will receive eight boosters of Gatecrash to construct two decks in this sanctioned Gatecrash tournament. Teams will be given 45 minutes to construct their decks. Teams will face off in a swiss style tournament.

    Price: $40 per team
Prizes: 3 boosters per team entered into pool.

Magic: The Gathering – GottaCon Victoria vs. Vancouver Grudge Match
    By GottaCon Team and Yellowjacket.
    Day: Sunday
    Start Time: 11:00AM

Formats to be played: Standard Constructed, Draft, Cube Draft

    Team Composition:
Teams will be composed of nine players. One of the nine players will be considered the team captain and he will speak for the team. Each team will break their nine players into three groupings or three players, which will be called a cluster. One cluster will represent Standard Constructed, one cluster will represent Draft and one cluster will represent Modern.

    How Teams are Built:
It is up to the city involved to construct their team. It is recommended that both teams use the same team construction method.

    Execution of the Event:
Each cluster will face off against the same format cluster of the opposing team in round robin format and DCI rules. Each player in a cluster will face off against each player in the opposing team cluster in a best of three games match. All clusters will play at the same time for a total of three rounds for each cluster. By running the event this way it should conclude within 2 to 4 hours. DCI team rules are in effect during matches. Judges will be watching for slow play as a result of player to player communications.

Please note that there is a maximum of four of any one card in a constructed cluster (so you can only have 4 lightning bolts between all three standard decks and the Modern decks could also have up to four lightning bolts between them as well)

The team with the most wins in the draft cluster takes possession of all the draft cards for both teams and distributes them among the overall team as the team sees fit.

Teammates may communicate with each other at any time, unless they leave the area near their side of the table. If they leave that area, they may not return until the end of the match.

Hidden info is not to be revealed. If a player of a team glimpses a deck type or card(s) in an opponent’s deck before the deck is made public, players are asked to keep this info to themselves. E.G. opponent watches a player shuffle and sees the cards then tells the teammate who is playing that player. First drawn hand is seen by a player, then a mulligan is taken, player should not share what they saw.

    Point System:
Each match victory within a cluster is worth one point. There will be a total of nine matches per cluster which means a total of 27 points up for grabs. No ties allowed. The team with the most points at the end wins.

    Other Events:

    Solicitation for Event Coordinators

Posted in News on November 6th, 2012 by evanhatch

We are putting out the call for event submissions for GottaCon 2013. If you would like to run an event at GottaCon 2013 (become an event coordinator) please contact us at the related address below:

Once we receive your message outlining your interest we will contact you via email with information on what to do next.

Benefits for event coordinators will be the same as last year which was 33% discount off of a full weekend pass (not including special packages) or $11.90 discount off of any ticket you purchase for each slot of events you run. Run three or more events get a free weekend pass (valued at $35.71). All discounts are valued before HST pricing, the maximum discount value is $35.71. If you are attending for the full weekend you will also receive a swag bag and be granted early access to the convention Friday if you show up between 4:00pm and 5:00pm. This is in an effort to get you in before the rush which will allow you time to check out the exhibitors and the rest of the convention.

This year we will continue to award draw tickets to those people that participate in events labeled as a demonstration in an effort to get people trying out a variety of games. These draws will happen at the end of each slot (from 9am to 11pm each day) on top of the door prize draws and other giveaways.

Also new this year is we will be shutting down the video gaming area at 4am each night. This is due to observed attendance levels in those areas after 3am for the last four years. Security will be posted in the area between 4am and 8am and only staff will be allowed access. It will also give us time to cool down the servers, reset the routers and deal with patching, hardware issues etc that develop over the weekend.

Thank you and if you have further questions please contact Evan Hatch at ehatch@gottacon.com.
